๐ŸŽฏ Today's Learning Goals / Lernziele

  • Understand the two German negation words: 'nicht' (not) and 'kein' (no/not a)
  • Master the decision rule: use 'kein' before nouns with ein/eine/ein or no article; use 'nicht' for everything else
  • Apply correct 'nicht' placement: end of sentence, before adjectives, before prepositional phrases, before specific verbs
  • Decline 'kein' like the indefinite article: kein/keine/kein (matching gender and number)
  • Avoid the classic mistake: 'Ich habe nicht Auto' (wrong) vs. 'Ich habe kein Auto' (correct)
  • Form negative responses naturally in everyday conversation

๐Ÿ“š Grammar & Rules / Grammatik

1. The Two Negation Words: nicht vs. kein

German has TWO ways to say 'not': 'nicht' negates verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. 'kein' negates nouns that would take 'ein/eine' or have no article.

The golden rule is simple: Ask yourself, 'Am I negating a NOUN?' If yes, check whether that noun would normally have 'ein/eine' or no article. If so, replace 'ein' with 'kein' (or add 'kein' where there was no article). For everything else -- verbs, adjectives, adverbs, names, pronouns, prepositional phrases -- use 'nicht'.

COL1COL2
Use KEIN when...Use NICHT when...
The noun has 'ein/eine/ein'Negating a VERB (action)
The noun has NO articleNegating an ADJECTIVE
Ich habe ein Auto. โ†’ Ich habe KEIN Auto.Ich arbeite. โ†’ Ich arbeite NICHT.
Ich trinke Kaffee. โ†’ Ich trinke KEINEN Kaffee.Das ist NICHT schoen.
Er hat eine Schwester. โ†’ Er hat KEINE Schwester.Sie kommt NICHT aus Berlin.
Ich habe kein Handy. โ€” I don't have a cell phone.
๐Ÿ’ก 'ein Handy' โ†’ 'kein Handy'
Wir trinken keinen Alkohol. โ€” We don't drink alcohol.
๐Ÿ’ก No article before 'Alkohol' โ†’ 'keinen Alkohol' (Akk. masc.)
Sie arbeitet nicht. โ€” She doesn't work.
๐Ÿ’ก Negating the verb โ†’ 'nicht'
Das Wetter ist nicht gut. โ€” The weather is not good.
๐Ÿ’ก Negating the adjective 'gut' โ†’ 'nicht'
โš ๏ธ Common Mistake: NEVER say 'Ich habe nicht Auto' or 'Ich habe nicht ein Auto.' The correct form is always 'Ich habe kein Auto.' When negating a noun with ein/eine or no article, you MUST use kein.
๐Ÿ’ก Study Tip: Quick test: Can you put 'ein/eine' in front of the noun? If yes โ†’ use KEIN. If there's already a definite article (der/die/das) or possessive โ†’ use NICHT.

2. Placement of 'nicht' in the Sentence

'Nicht' goes at the END of the sentence by default, but moves BEFORE the element you want to negate (adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, or specific sentence parts).

The placement of 'nicht' follows a clear priority order: (1) At the END of the sentence when negating the whole idea or the verb. (2) BEFORE a predicate adjective (after 'sein'). (3) BEFORE a prepositional phrase. (4) BEFORE a specific element you want to contrast. Think of 'nicht' as a spotlight -- it shines on whatever comes AFTER it, negating that element.

PositionRuleExample
End of sentenceNegating the verb/whole sentenceIch verstehe das nicht.
Before adjectiveNegating a predicate adjectiveDas ist nicht teuer.
Before adverbNegating an adverbEr singt nicht gut.
Before prepositionNegating a prepositional phraseSie wohnt nicht in Berlin.
Before noun with def. articleNegating a specific nounDas ist nicht der Lehrer.
Ich komme heute nicht. โ€” I'm not coming today.
๐Ÿ’ก 'nicht' at the end โ†’ negating the whole action
Er ist nicht muede. โ€” He is not tired.
๐Ÿ’ก 'nicht' before the adjective 'muede'
Sie faehrt nicht nach Hamburg. โ€” She is not going to Hamburg.
๐Ÿ’ก 'nicht' before prepositional phrase 'nach Hamburg'
Wir spielen nicht gern Fussball. โ€” We don't like playing soccer.
๐Ÿ’ก 'nicht' before the adverb 'gern'
Das ist nicht mein Buch. โ€” That is not my book.
๐Ÿ’ก 'nicht' before possessive 'mein'
โš ๏ธ Common Mistake: Do NOT put 'nicht' between the subject and verb like in English! 'Ich nicht verstehe' is WRONG. The verb stays in Position 2. Say: 'Ich verstehe nicht.'
๐Ÿ’ก Study Tip: When in doubt, put 'nicht' at the end of the sentence -- it's correct most of the time! Then learn the exceptions (before adjectives, before prepositions).

3. Declension of 'kein' (Like ein-Words)

'Kein' takes exactly the same endings as the indefinite article 'ein'. It changes based on the gender and case of the noun: kein (m./n.), keine (f.), kein (n.), keine (pl.).

In the Nominative case: kein Tisch (m.), keine Lampe (f.), kein Buch (n.), keine Bucher (pl.). In the Accusative case (direct object), only the masculine changes: keinen Tisch (m. Akk.). Feminine, neuter, and plural stay the same. Since you already know the 'ein' pattern, just add a 'k' in front!

GenderNominativeAccusativeExample (Nom.)Example (Akk.)
Maskulin (der)keinkeinenDas ist kein Stuhl.Ich habe keinen Bruder.
Feminin (die)keinekeineDas ist keine Tasche.Ich habe keine Schwester.
Neutrum (das)keinkeinDas ist kein Buch.Ich habe kein Auto.
Plural (die)keinekeineDas sind keine Aepfel.Ich habe keine Kinder.
Er hat keinen Hund. โ€” He doesn't have a dog.
๐Ÿ’ก Hund = der Hund (masc.) โ†’ keinen in Accusative
Wir haben keine Zeit. โ€” We have no time.
๐Ÿ’ก Zeit = die Zeit (fem.) โ†’ keine
Hier gibt es kein Restaurant. โ€” There is no restaurant here.
๐Ÿ’ก Restaurant = das Restaurant (neut.) โ†’ kein
Sie haben keine Fragen. โ€” They have no questions.
๐Ÿ’ก Fragen = plural โ†’ keine
โš ๏ธ Common Mistake: Remember: the ACCUSATIVE MASCULINE is the only form that changes! 'keinen' appears only for masculine nouns as direct objects. All other forms stay the same as the Nominative.
๐Ÿ’ก Study Tip: Pattern: kein = ein with a 'k'. If you can say 'ein Mann' โ†’ 'kein Mann'. If you can say 'einen Mann' โ†’ 'keinen Mann'. Same endings, always!

4. Special Cases and Common Patterns

Some fixed expressions always use 'nicht', and definite-article nouns always use 'nicht' rather than 'kein'. The word 'kein' NEVER appears before a noun with der/die/das or a possessive.

When a noun has a DEFINITE article (der/die/das), you cannot use 'kein' -- you must use 'nicht': 'Das ist nicht der Lehrer' (not 'kein der Lehrer'). The same applies for possessive pronouns: 'Das ist nicht mein Buch' (not 'kein mein Buch'). Fixed expressions like 'nicht wahr?' (isn't it?), 'gar nicht' (not at all), and 'noch nicht' (not yet) always use 'nicht'.

Das ist nicht der richtige Weg. โ€” That is not the right way.
๐Ÿ’ก Definite article 'der' โ†’ must use 'nicht'
Das ist nicht meine Tasche. โ€” That is not my bag.
๐Ÿ’ก Possessive 'meine' โ†’ must use 'nicht'
Er kommt noch nicht. โ€” He is not coming yet.
๐Ÿ’ก 'noch nicht' = not yet (fixed phrase)
Das ist gar nicht schlimm. โ€” That is not bad at all.
๐Ÿ’ก 'gar nicht' = not at all (fixed phrase)
Du bist nicht allein, oder? โ€” You are not alone, are you?
๐Ÿ’ก Negating adjective โ†’ 'nicht'
Wir fahren heute nicht mit dem Bus. โ€” We are not taking the bus today.
๐Ÿ’ก 'nicht' before prepositional phrase 'mit dem Bus'
โš ๏ธ Common Mistake: Never combine 'kein' with a definite article or possessive. 'Das ist kein das Buch' and 'Das ist kein mein Heft' are both WRONG. Use 'nicht' before der/die/das and mein/dein/sein etc.
๐Ÿ’ก Study Tip: Useful fixed phrases: 'noch nicht' (not yet), 'gar nicht' (not at all), 'nicht mehr' (no longer/not anymore), 'nicht nur... sondern auch' (not only... but also).
