🎯 Today's Learning Goals / Lernziele

  • Ask for and give directions using 'Entschuldigung, wo ist...?'
  • Learn the nine two-way (Wechsel-) prepositions: in, an, auf, neben, zwischen, vor, hinter, über, unter
  • Understand the difference between Wo? (dative = location) and Wohin? (accusative = direction)
  • Describe where things are located using local prepositions

📚 Grammar & Rules / Grammatik

1. The Nine Two-Way Prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

Nine prepositions can take EITHER dative (location/Wo?)

These prepositions are called 'Wechselpräpositionen' (two-way prepositions) because they switch between dative and accusative. Use DATIVE when answering 'Wo?' (Where? — static location, no movement). Use ACCUSATIVE when answering 'Wohin?' (Where to? — movement toward a destination). At the A1 level, focus on the most common combinations.

PREPOSITIONMEANINGDATIVEWOACCUSATIVEWOHIN
— Where is the pharmacy? — The pharmacy is next to the post office.
💡 Wo? = dative (der Post)
Wohin gehst du? — Ich gehe in den Supermarkt. — Where are you going? — I'm going to the supermarket.
💡 Wohin?
— The restaurant is between the cinema and the bank.
💡 Static location = dative
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't mix up dative and accusative! 'Ich bin in dem Park' (I am IN the park — location) vs. 'Ich gehe in den Park' (I go INTO the park — direction). The article changes!
💡 Study Tip: Remember: Wo? = staying (dative). Wohin? = going (accusative). Location vs. Direction!

Several preposition + article combinations contract into shorter forms in everyday German.

These contractions are very common and sound much more natural than the full forms. The most important ones: in dem → im, in das → ins, an dem → am, an das → ans, zu dem → zum, zu der → zur. Using the full form sounds stilted in spoken German.

FULLCONTRACTIONEXAMPLE
in demimIch bin im Supermarkt. (I am in the supermarket.)
in dasinsIch gehe ins Kino. (I go to the cinema.)
an demamDas Cafe ist am Marktplatz. (The cafe is at the market square.)
an dasansGeh ans Fenster! (Go to the window!)
zu demzumIch gehe zum Bahnhof. (I go to the train station.)
zu derzurIch gehe zur Post. (I go to the post office.)
Das Buch ist im Regal. — The book is on the shelf.
💡 im = in dem (dative neuter/masculine)
Wir gehen ins Restaurant. — We go to the restaurant.
💡 ins = in das (accusative neuter)
Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? — How do I get to the train station?
💡 zum = zu dem (dative masculine)
Die Haltestelle ist am Rathaus. — The bus stop is at the town hall.
💡 am = an dem (dative neuter)
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't say 'Ich bin in dem Supermarkt' in speech — always contract to 'im Supermarkt'. The full form sounds unnatural.
💡 Study Tip: The contractions im, ins, am, ans, zum, zur are so common that you should learn them as single words.

3. Asking for and Giving Directions

Use 'Entschuldigung, wo ist...?' to ask where something is, and 'Wie komme ich zu...?' to ask how to get there.

When asking for directions, start with 'Entschuldigung' (Excuse me). Key direction words: geradeaus (straight ahead), links (left), rechts (right), die erste/zweite/dritte Straße (the first/second/third street). For distance: 'Es ist nicht weit' (It's not far), '5 Minuten zu Fuß' (5 minutes on foot).

Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof? — Excuse me, where is the train station?
Wie komme ich zur Post? — How do I get to the post office?
💡 zu + dative: zur Post
Gehen Sie geradeaus und dann links. — Go straight ahead and then left.
Nehmen Sie die zweite Straße rechts. — Take the second street on the right.
Es ist auf der linken Seite. — It's on the left side.
Es ist ungefähr fünf Minuten zu Fuß. — It's about five minutes on foot.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't confuse 'links' (left) with 'rechts' (right). A trick: 'rechts' has more letters, and most people write with their RIGHT hand.
💡 Study Tip: When giving directions, use the formal 'Sie' form (Gehen Sie..., Nehmen Sie...) unless talking to a friend.

4. Places in Town

Learn common places with their articles. Most buildings and institutions use 'die' (feminine) or 'der' (masculine).

— Where is the nearest pharmacy?
Der Bahnhof ist am Ende der Straße. — The train station is at the end of the street.
Die Post ist gegenüber dem Rathaus. — The post office is opposite the town hall.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't confuse 'die Bank' (bank/bench — same word!) with 'das Bankkonto' (bank account). Context tells you which meaning is intended.
💡 Study Tip: Group places by article: der (Bahnhof, Supermarkt, Marktplatz), die (Post, Apotheke, Bank, Kirche, Bibliothek), das (Rathaus, Krankenhaus, Kino).
