Key Themes in German B1
Reaching B1 is the official requirement for German citizenship and most university preparation courses. It tests your ability to express opinions, deal with travel emergencies, and write cohesive arguments.
1. Konjunktiv II
Polite requests (hätte gern, könnte) and unreal hypothetical conditions (wenn ich reich wäre...).
2. Passive Voice (Passiv)
Process passive (wird gemacht) and state passive (ist gemacht), essential for official letters and workplace German.
3. The Genitive Case
Master the 4th German case: possession, genitive prepositions (wegen, trotz, während), and formal registers.
4. Multi-Part Connectors
Sophisticated conjunctions: sowohl... als auch, nicht nur... sondern auch, weder... noch, entweder... oder.
5. Infinitive with 'zu'
Complex intent structures: um... zu (in order to), ohne... zu (without doing), (an)statt... zu.
6. Goethe-Zertifikat B1 Drills
Modular exam strategy: Reading (5 parts), Listening (4 parts), Writing (formal + forum), and 2-person Speaking presentation.
