  • Use 'Ich bin ... von Beruf' to state your profession

📚 Grammar & Rules / Grammatik

1. The -in Suffix: Forming Feminine Job Titles

Add -in to the masculine job title to form the feminine version. The article changes from 'der' to 'die'.

In German, every job title has a masculine and a feminine form. The masculine form uses 'der' and the feminine form uses 'die'. To create the feminine form, you typically add '-in' to the masculine noun. If the masculine form ends in '-e', you drop the '-e' before adding '-in'. In the plural, masculine forms often add '-' or '-e', while feminine forms always add '-innen'.

Mein Vater ist Lehrer. — My father is a teacher.
💡 No article before professions with 'sein'
Meine Mutter ist Lehrerin. — My mother is a teacher.
💡 Feminine form with -in
Die Lehrerinnen sind nett. — The (female) teachers are nice.
💡 Plural feminine: -innen
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't forget: when using 'sein' (to be) with professions, you drop the article. Say 'Er ist Lehrer' NOT 'Er ist ein Lehrer' (unless you add an adjective: 'Er ist ein guter Lehrer').
💡 Study Tip: Think of -in as the magic feminine ending. Masculine + in = feminine. Lehrer + in = Lehrerin, Student + in = Studentin.

2. Irregular Feminine Forms with Umlaut Changes

Some masculine job titles gain an Umlaut (ä, ö, ü) in addition to the -in ending when forming the feminine.

Several common job titles change their stem vowel when adding -in. The vowels a → ä, o → ö, and u → ü in the feminine form. These are among the most common professions, so they must be memorized individually. The Umlaut change often mirrors the plural pattern of the masculine noun.

der Zahnarztdie Zahnärztina → ä (in -arzt)
Meine Schwester ist Ärztin. — My sister is a doctor.
💡 Arzt → Ärztin (Umlaut + -in)
Die Köchin macht eine Suppe. — The (female) cook is making a soup.
💡 Koch → Köchin (Umlaut + -in)
Frau Berger ist Anwältin. — Ms. Berger is a lawyer.
💡 Anwalt → Anwältin (Umlaut + -in)
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't say 'die Arztin' — the Umlaut is mandatory: 'die Ärztin'. Without it, the word is wrong.
💡 Study Tip: The most common Umlaut jobs: Arzt/Ärztin, Koch/Köchin, Anwalt/Anwältin. Make flashcards for these three and you'll cover the key irregulars.

3. Asking and Answering About Professions

Use 'Was sind Sie von Beruf?' (formal) or 'Was bist du von Beruf?' (informal) to ask about someone's job. Answer with 'Ich bin ... (von Beruf).'

There are several ways to ask about and state professions in German. The most common formal question is 'Was sind Sie von Beruf?' The phrase 'von Beruf' literally means 'by profession'. You can also ask 'Was machen Sie beruflich?' (What do you do professionally?) or 'Als was arbeiten Sie?' (As what do you work?). When answering, use 'Ich bin ...' without an article before the profession.

Was sind Sie von Beruf? — What is your profession? (formal)
💡 Most common formal way to ask
Was bist du von Beruf? — What is your profession? (informal)
💡 For friends and peers
Ich bin Ingenieur von Beruf. — I am an engineer by profession.
💡 No article before the job
Was machen Sie beruflich? — What do you do professionally?
💡 Alternative formal question
Als was arbeiten Sie? — As what do you work?
💡 Another formal variant
Ich arbeite als Verkäuferin. — I work as a saleswoman.
💡 'als' = as (for the role)
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't say 'Ich bin eine Lehrerin.' In German, you drop the article with professions after 'sein': 'Ich bin Lehrerin.' The article only appears with an adjective: 'Ich bin eine gute Lehrerin.'
💡 Study Tip: 'Von Beruf' is optional but common. Both 'Ich bin Ärztin' and 'Ich bin Ärztin von Beruf' are correct.

4. Compound Job Titles

German forms compound job titles by combining two or more words into one. The last word determines the gender and the -in rule.

German loves compound nouns, and job titles are no exception. A compound job title combines a descriptor or field with a base profession. The last part of the compound determines the gender and how you form the feminine. For example: Zahnarzt (Zahn + Arzt = tooth + doctor = dentist) — feminine: Zahnärztin. Krankenpfleger (Kranken + Pfleger = sick + carer = nurse) — feminine: Krankenpflegerin.

COMPOUNDPARTSMEANINGFEMININE
— My dentist is very friendly.
Sie arbeitet als Krankenpflegerin. — She works as a nurse.
Der Informatiker programmiert Software. — The computer scientist programs software.
⚠️ Common Mistake: The feminine -in ending only attaches to the LAST element. Krankenpfleger → Krankenpflegerin (not Krankeinpfleger).
💡 Study Tip: To decode a compound job title, read it from right to left: Grundschullehrer = Lehrer (teacher) at a Grundschule (primary school).
