  • Use separable verbs in the office context (anfangen, aufhören, teilnehmen, vorbereiten, ausdrucken)
  • Name common office equipment and supplies with correct articles
  • Combine verbs with prepositions for workplace actions (teilnehmen an, sich vorbereiten auf)
  • Sequence events with zuerst, dann, danach, zum Schluss
  • Talk about your office routine in simple sentences

📚 Grammar & Rules / Grammatik

1. Separable Verbs in the Office

Many everyday office verbs are separable: the prefix goes to the end of the sentence in the present tense.

Separable verbs have a stressed prefix (an-, auf-, aus-, teil-, vor-, mit-) that detaches and moves to the end of the clause. In the infinitive the prefix stays attached: anfangen, aufhören. In a present-tense main clause: 'Ich fange um 8 Uhr an.' The prefix always lands at the very end.

INFINITIVEMEANINGEXAMPLE
anfangento start / beginIch fange um 8 Uhr an.
aufhörento stop / finishWir hören um 17 Uhr auf.
teilnehmen (an + Dat.)to participate (in)Er nimmt an der Besprechung teil.
vorbereitento prepareSie bereitet die Präsentation vor.
ausdruckento print (out)Ich drucke den Bericht aus.
anrufento call (phone)Rufst du den Kunden an?
abschließento complete / lockWir schließen das Projekt ab.
eintragento enter / registerIch trage den Termin ein.
Ich fange jeden Tag um acht Uhr an. — I start every day at eight o'clock.
💡 'fange...an' — prefix at end
Wann hörst du heute auf? — When do you finish today?
💡 'hörst...auf' — prefix at end of question too
Sie druckt die Dokumente aus. — She prints the documents out.
💡 'druckt...aus'
Er nimmt an einem Meeting teil. — He participates in a meeting.
💡 'nimmt...teil' — an + Dativ
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't forget to move the prefix to the end: 'Ich anfange um 8 Uhr' is WRONG. Correct: 'Ich fange um 8 Uhr an.'
💡 Study Tip: Think of separable verbs like a boomerang: the prefix flies away to the end of the sentence and waits there.

2. Time Expressions for Daily Routine

Use 'um' for clock times, 'von...bis' for time spans, and sequence words (zuerst, dann, danach, zum Schluss) to order events.

Describing your workday requires precise time language. 'Um' + time = at a specific hour. 'Von...bis' = from...to/until. Sequence adverbs help chain events: zuerst (first), dann (then), danach (after that), anschließend (subsequently), zum Schluss (finally). These adverbs usually come at the start of a sentence or after the verb.

EXPRESSIONMEANINGTYPE
um 8 Uhrat 8 o'clockspecific time
von 9 bis 12 Uhrfrom 9 to 12 o'clocktime span
zuerstfirstsequence
dannthensequence
danachafter thatsequence
anschließendsubsequentlysequence
zum Schlussfinally / at the endsequence
morgensin the morningtime of day
mittagsat middaytime of day
nachmittagsin the afternoontime of day
abendsin the eveningtime of day
Zuerst lese ich meine E-Mails. — First I read my emails.
💡 Zuerst triggers verb-second word order
Dann habe ich eine Besprechung. — Then I have a meeting.
Danach schreibe ich den Bericht. — After that I write the report.
Zum Schluss schalte ich den Computer aus. — Finally I turn off the computer.
Von Montag bis Freitag arbeite ich. — From Monday to Friday I work.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Remember verb-second (V2) rule: when a time expression starts the sentence, the verb must come second and the subject moves after it. 'Zuerst ich lese...' is wrong — 'Zuerst lese ich...' is correct.
💡 Study Tip: Build your workday story like a chain: Zuerst... Dann... Danach... Zum Schluss... This gives your description a clear structure.

3. Office Equipment — Articles and Plurals

Office nouns have fixed genders. Learn each item with its article (der/die/das) and plural form.

Just like other German nouns, office equipment words must be memorized with their article. Many tech words borrowed from English are masculine (der Computer) or neuter (das Tablet). The plural forms vary and must be learned individually.

SINGULARPLURALMEANING
der Computer (-)die Computercomputer
der Drucker (-)die Druckerprinter
der Bildschirm (-e)die Bildschirmescreen / monitor
der Schreibtisch (-e)die Schreibtischedesk
der Ordner (-)die Ordnerfolder / binder
der Kugelschreiber (-)die Kugelschreiberballpoint pen
die Tastatur (-en)die Tastaturenkeyboard
die Maus (Mäuse)die Mäusemouse
das Papier (-e)die Papierepaper
das Telefon (-e)die Telefonetelephone
das Büro (-s)die Bürosoffice
Der Drucker funktioniert nicht. — The printer is not working.
💡 der Drucker — masculine
Ich brauche einen neuen Kugelschreiber. — I need a new pen.
💡 Accusative masculine: einen
Die Tastatur ist kaputt. — The keyboard is broken.
💡 die Tastatur — feminine
Wo ist das Papier? — Where is the paper?
💡 das Papier — neuter
⚠️ Common Mistake: Die Maus (computer mouse) has the same plural as the animal: die Mäuse. Don't say 'die Mausen'.
💡 Study Tip: Group office nouns by gender to make them easier to remember: der-group (Computer, Drucker, Schreibtisch), die-group (Tastatur, Maus), das-group (Papier, Telefon, Büro).

4. Verb + Preposition Combinations at Work

Some verbs always pair with a specific preposition. The preposition determines the case of the following noun.

In professional German, many verbs combine with fixed prepositions: teilnehmen an (+Dat.), sich vorbereiten auf (+Akk.), arbeiten an (+Dat.), warten auf (+Akk.), sich kümmern um (+Akk.), sprechen mit (+Dat.), sprechen über (+Akk.). You must memorize which preposition goes with which verb and what case it requires.

VERBCASEMEANINGEXAMPLE
teilnehmen anDativto participate inan der Besprechung teilnehmen
arbeiten anDativto work onan einem Projekt arbeiten
warten aufAkkusativto wait forauf eine Antwort warten
sich vorbereiten aufAkkusativto prepare forsich auf das Meeting vorbereiten
sich kümmern umAkkusativto take care ofsich um die Kunden kümmern
sprechen mitDativto speak withmit dem Chef sprechen
sprechen überAkkusativto speak aboutüber das Projekt sprechen
Ich nehme an der Besprechung teil. — I participate in the meeting.
💡 an + der (Dativ feminine)
Wir arbeiten an einem neuen Projekt. — We are working on a new project.
💡 an + einem (Dativ neuter)
Er wartet auf den Chef. — He is waiting for the boss.
💡 auf + den (Akkusativ masculine)
Sie kümmert sich um die Kunden. — She takes care of the customers.
💡 um + die (Akkusativ plural)
⚠️ Common Mistake: Don't mix up 'sprechen mit' (to speak with someone, Dativ) and 'sprechen über' (to speak about something, Akkusativ). They look similar but use different cases.
💡 Study Tip: Make verb+preposition flashcards: write the verb on one side and the preposition + case on the other. These pairs are fixed — you cannot swap the preposition.
